Genetically Engineered Farm Animals

Factory hog production in Canada is creating many problems - including serious water pollution due to excessive phosphorus from over-application of manure to farmland. Instead of ensuring policy and regulations prevent such pollution, our government is considering an application by the University of Guelph to approve a genetically modified pig, Enviropig TM, which would excrete less phosphorus. We think this is approaching the problem from the wrong end, and may well be a slippery slope to more widespread genetic engineering of farm animals.
